Opinion: The reasons why Real Madrid should sacrifice Brazilian winger for Mbappe

Real Madrid are going to face the final and most decisive stretch of the 2023-24 season after the current international break, but the eyes of the club itself and a significant part of its fanbase are already set on the summer transfer window that is going to succeed the conclusion of La Liga and UEFA Champions League campaigns.

In this window, one of the major changes expected in the Real Madrid squad is the inclusion of Kylian Mbappe, who is reported to be ready to run out his contract at PSG and join his childhood dream club Real Madrid.

There is no doubt that Kylian Mbappe is currently one of the best players in the world, and also has a profile that can fill in the club’s coffers with merchandise sales. Thus, his acquisition will be a major success for the Royal Whites, both on a sporting and an economic level.

However, at least sportingly, there are still some issues that his arrival can cause. For instance, Real Madrid already have one of the best left-wingers in the world, Vinicius Junior, playing at a very high level for them, and this is a position that Kylian Mbappe has also occupied for a great part of his career.

This problem does not end here, as the Merengues also have Rodrygo Goes, who is also the most comfortable on the left, but has rarely got the chance to occupy this position because he performs better on the right wing than Vinicius Jr. does, and Vinicius is simply undroppable for Ancelotti right now.

With Bellingham also a key starter for Real Madrid, Los Blancos will have only two spots available in attack if the Englishman plays in the diamond role that he has most frequently done this season.

Thus, Rodrygo will be one of the main sufferers from the possible arrival of Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid. As opposed to Vinicius, the Frenchman can also play on the right wing and has also been playing as a center-forward this season under Luis Enrique.

Meanwhile, Rodrygo has also played as a center-forward in a two-man attacking scheme for the most part of the season, scoring 12 goals and giving 2 assists.

However, with Mbappe’s arrival this summer, the Brazilian is going to see a significant drop-off in his minutes on the pitch, as Ancelotti will have to play both Vinicius and Mbappe whenever they are available.

Furthermore, Brahim Diaz has also performed at a good level this season, and he will be a trustworthy backup for these attackers in case any of them is unavailable, while Joselu’s continuity at the club also cannot be ruled out at this moment.

In such a scenario, the best way forward for both Real Madrid and Rodrygo will be to part ways. The Brazilian already has suitors appearing from the Premier League, and he can continue showing his talents in the most competitive league in the world, while Real Madrid will also not miss him too much with the overflow of quality in the attack.

His departure can also allow Real Madrid to gain a significant amount, as he is currently valued at €100 million, and the reduction of his wages will also allow the club to lower their salary bill to some extent.

There will definitely be other perspectives calling for other sales, and retention of Rodrygo, and the players’ skills and qualities need no introduction. But keeping in view the possible context, his sale remains a highly attractive option for the Merengues this summer.
