Luka Modric is the oldest player in the Real Madrid squad, and by quite some margin, as he is already 38 years old, while the second-oldest player in the team, David Alaba, is only 32.

Owing to this age, Modric lost his starting position, and became one of the regular substitutes for Carlo Ancelotti. Furthermore, media also speculated that 2023-24 was the last season of the Croat legend in the Merengue club

However, Toni Kroos’ decision to retire and the quality of performances that Modric is still putting up at this point of his career forced Los Blancos to retain him for at least another season. The club had already made the decision to renew him before Modric left for the UEFA EURO 2024.

Real Madrid have now officially announced that Modric has renewed his contract with them till June 2025. In this regard, the Vikings issued an official statement which went as follows:

“Real Madrid C. F. and Luka Modrić have agreed to extend the contract of our captain, who will be linked to the club until 30 June 2025.

Modrić arrived at Real Madrid in 2012, and in his twelve seasons representing our shirt he has become a Real Madrid and world football legend.”

The statement went on to recognise the 26 titles the Croat has won with Real Madrid, including 6 Champions Leagues, 5 Club World Cups, 4 European Super Cups, 4 La Liga titles, 2 Copas del Rey, and 5 Spanish Super Cups.

The club also highlighted that Modric has won the most titles with the Merengue club, while also being one of the only five players to have won 6 European cups.

Individually, the midfielder has won 1 Ballon d’Or, 1 FIFA Player of the Year, and was named as the UEFA Player of the Year in 2018.

Up to now, Modric has played 534 games as a Los Blancos player, scoring 39 goals in the process. But with his contract renewed for another year, he can take this number significantly higher, and thus further establish his name as one of the true legends of Real Madrid.
