Match Overview:

With the Spanish First Division title already secured, Los Merengues will look at this tie as one of minimal importance. However, being Real Madrid, there is still a certain sporting integrity to observe. For this outing, it would not be surprising to see Carlo Ancelotti make use of some rotations in his team.

However, be that as it may, it would not be Real Madrid to field a lineup that is too weak for comfort. Some important players from their gala eleven could end up making appearances, while others who have not been so lucky this season could get their chance to shine as well.

In terms of form, Real Madrid have looked essentially invulnerable. The last time Ancelotti’s men suffered defeat was back in January, when they lost to Atletico Madrid in the Copa Del Rey. Since that match, the taste of defeat has become a forgotten woe for the champions of Spain, who have won nine straight games in La Liga as of their latest fixtures.

Villarreal, led by Marcelino Garcia, have hardly had similar fortunes this season. Currently sitting in 8th place, the Yellow Submarine has struggled for much of the campaign. However, they have found their best selves again in recent games it seems, with four wins out of their last five La Liga games backing that statement.

For Los Blancos, the result here is essentially pointless in the grand scheme of things. However, with the UEFA Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund edging closer and closer as the days go by, it would be in the best interests of Real Madrid to keep their winning mentality and record up, while also making sure their players remain active and fresh for the massive challenge ahead.
