Some of the footballing world’s greatest left-backs have worn the Real Madrid colors- the Brazilian Roberto Carlos and then his heir, Marcelo are two names that stand out in this regard in recent history.

Théo Hernandez had a rather unsuccessful stint at the club when he was signed in 2017.
Sergio Reguilon was a first-team regular in 2018 before the club signed Ferland Mendy.

However, his career has been plagued with injuries, and even Miguel Gutiérrez had a purple patch during that time but the Spaniard was sold to Girona – where he is now shining.

All in all, Real Madrid have not found an able replacement for Marcelo till now. Ferland Mendy, while solid defensively, has not exactly set things alight at Real Madrid, while Fran Garcia is also not having a great first season at the Santiago Bernabeu.

To salvage this situation, Real Madrid executives have been keeping an eye on Alphonso Davies’ contractual situation at Bayern, and being just 23, deem him as the perfect fit for the future.

The Canadian’s contract expires in June 2025, and, according to ESPN, they will only make a move for him in the summer if the player does not choose to renew – in that case, Bayern would list him on the transfer market instead of risking him losing for free.

Los Blancos share a great relationship with the German club and will wait until the player’s signal. Madrid want to follow a similar pathway that saw them sign Toni Kroos in 2014, who had a year left on his contract and Bayern allowed him to leave for $27.3 million.

A similar approach was taken with David Alaba as well, however, he eventually joined the Merengues for free in 2021.

Ferland Mendy and Fran García have not been convincing enough for Carlo, hence the club would pounce at any given opportunity to sign the Canadian left-back.

Davies is attracted by Real’s sporting project but will also hear Bayern’s final renewal offer before making a decision about his future.

If the player pushes for a move, then things would move swiftly going forward, given the relationship between both the European Giants.

Real Madrid have a policy of signing the world’s best under-25 talent, and they already boast some of the best in their current squad. Davies can be an important piece in the puzzle for Carlo.

Next season, Madridistas may see the names of Alphonso Davies, Vinícius Júnior, and potentially Kylian Mbappé in their squad – arguably sending a warning to teams across Europe.
