It has been almost six years since Real Madrid last brought in a new player in the January transfer window. The Merengue hierarchy has been rather averse to the idea of reinforcing the team mid-season for all these years, despite having gotten some of the best players in their history, including Marcelo, Higuain, and Casemiro in winter.
However, the current situation of the Los Blancos’ squad might force the club to once again look to bring in new players in the winter transfer window. This is especially the case as Real Madrid started this season with a clear weakness in the centre of the defence, while Carvajal’s serious injury also makes things even more difficult for Carlo Ancelotti.
In such a context, MARCA reports that Real Madrid are looking to sign two players in January. One of these players will be for the centre of the defence, while the other will be to replace Dani Carvajal in the right-back position.
Previously, the Merengues were looking to bring in a new right-back next summer, but with Carvajal’s injury, they will make a decision in the coming few days. Alexander Arnold has been touted as a target for the club, but Real Madrid were considering his arrival as a free agent next summer. If they want to sign him in January, Los Blancos will have to negotiate with Liverpool.
For now, Ancelotti has only Lucas Vazquez to play in this position, as youngsters like David Jimenez, Loren Aguado, and Fortea do not yet look ready to make the jump to the first team.
For the centre-back position, there are several options on the table. The current favourite of the Merengues is the RB Leipzig defender Castello Lukeba. The Ajax centre-back Jorrel Hato is also one of the candidates, as is the Palmeiras defender Vitor Reis.
All of these players are quite promising, and it remains to be seen which one of them will be incorporated by Real Madrid in January.
