With Dani Carvajal out for the rest of this season after the serious injury that he suffered in his last La Liga match against Villarreal, Real Madrid have only one player left for the right-back position, Lucas Vazquez.

Vazquez had been converted into a right-back only a few seasons ago, and it is clear that Carlo Ancelotti would need more players for this position if Real Madrid is to continue playing at its best level.

In this regard, there have been some reports of the Merengues breaking their custom of not buying new players in the winter market, as they will look to bring in players for the three weak positions in the squad, right-back, centre-back, and central midfield.

For the right-back position, the player most heavily linked with Los Blancos in the last few days has been the Liverpool fullback, Trent Alexander Arnold. The Englishman has his contract ending at the end of this season, but Real Madrid can start negotiating with the Premier League side to get him in January as well.

However, according to Mundo Deportivo, he is not the only candidate that the Merengues have in their sights for the right-back position, as they are also interested in the Chelsea fullback, Josh Acheampong.

The Spanish publication cites the English newspaper The Independent to claim that Real Madrid are interested in signing the 18-year-old fullback in January. However, getting him will not really be easy as other big European clubs like Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspurs, Borussia Dortmund, and Paris Saint Germain are also interested in him.

Meanwhile, the decision-makers at Chelsea are also quite clear that they do not want to sell the highly-rated youngster in the face of this serious interest from across Europe.

At 18 years of age, Acheampong will be an interesting option for the Merengues, as he will get significant playing time on the pitch with only Lucas Vazquez as his competitor. However, Real Madrid might want someone with more experience for such an important position, and it remains to be seen how this story develops in the coming weeks.
