Real Madrid returned to winning ways with their 2-0 victory over Villarreal last night. Federico Valverde and Vinicius Junior scored the two goals for the Merengues, while the Yellow Submarines were not able to translate several of their opportunities into goals.

While getting the three points against an opponent as difficult as Villarreal would normally be a cause for celebration, the win last night was a rather sad affair for Los Blancos, as they saw their captain, Dani Carvajal, leave the pitch in the final minutes of the match in visible pain and agony.

It was almost the last play of the match in which Carvajal went to fight for a ball with the Villarreal player Yeremy Pino. During this clash, his right leg collided with Yeremy’s leg, and both players went straight to the ground.

Carvajal’s tears and screams made it clear that he was going through a lot of pain, and the Real Madrid dressing room was left worried as he made his way to the tunnel on a stretcher.

Now, as MARCA has reported, Carvajal himself confirmed what the Real Madrid fans were fearing. The Spaniard took to social media to announce his cruciate ligament injury:

“A serious cruciate ligament injury has been confirmed; I will have to undergo surgery and will be off the pitch for several months. I’m already eager to start my recovery and return like a beast. Thank you all for your messages; I feel very loved.”

The Real Madrid defender shared this message along with a photo of himself lying in the medical facilities and with a beaming smile. The photo shows the right-back is in high spirits despite such a big blow. Hopefully, he will not let pessimism get near him in such a difficult time and will be able to get back to his best as soon as possible.
