After winning the La Liga and the UEFA Champions League titles last season, Real Madrid have started the 2024-25 season in a very poor fashion. The Merengues are currently 9 points behind the league leaders, Barcelona, although they have a game in hand.

Things are even worse in the Champions League, where they have lost two of their four games this season. Their latest defeat in the European competition came at the hands of AC Milan last night, as the Merengues fell to a 3-1 defeat, their second consecutive defeat at the Santiago Bernabeu after their 4-0 defeat to FC Barcelona at the end of the last month.

Naturally, Carlo Ancelotti was not too pleased with the result. As Mundo Deportivo has reported, while talking to the press after the game, the Italian tactician confessed that things are getting worrying for the White team:

“We need to be concerned. The reality is what you see on the field; we’re missing something, and it needs fixing. The team hasn’t shown a good version of itself in recent matches. We’ve conceded nine goals in three games, which is too much for a team that has built its strength on defensive solidity… It’s normal for the players to feel down, as I do. It’s going to be a long night, and it’s good that it is.”

Further commenting on the defensive problems of the team, the Real Madrid coach commented:

“We’re not defending well because we’re neither compact nor organized on the field. We’ve conceded many goals due to a lack of solidity and because the team isn’t properly ordered.”

However, Ancelotti did not name any players in particular for the team’s problems in the defence:

“Mentally, it’s not an individual problem but a collective one. We’re not in a good place emotionally. We need to fight, pick ourselves up, and work hard. We have to focus on improving because we’re not showing our best side, and we need to get it back.”

Ancelotti has made his diagnosis for the team’s problems in these comments, but now he needs to show that he has the tools to eliminate these problems. Hopefully, his experience and intelligence will allow him to solve this problem for Real Madrid, as another set of bad results can rerail the entire season for the Merengues.
