Las Palmas 1-1 Real Madrid: Match review

Date:

A disappointing display of football from Real Madrid led to Las Palmas securing a point against the reigning Spanish champions in a 1-1 draw.

Two changes were made to the starting lineup by Carlo Ancelotti, with Brahim Díaz and Luka Modric replacing Rodrygo and Arda Güler respectively.

The Merengues got off to a poor start. Oliver McBurnie found Alberto Moleiro in space, with the Spaniard going past Eder Militao as if the Brazilian was not even present and putting the ball in the back of the net to give Las Palmas the lead.

Fede Valverde, later on in the 1st half, almost scored his second consecutive free-kick as Jasper Cillessen made an incredible save, with the ball coming at him at speed. Antonio Rüdiger tried his luck from distance as well but the Dutch goalkeeper was at his best yet again and conceded a corner for Los Blancos.

Ferland Mendy, who was on a yellow card, and Brahim Díaz were substituted at half time with Fran García and Rodrygo coming in.

Real Madrid continued to attack the opposition goal but the finishing was not up to the mark as the ball either ended up in the goalkeepers hands comfortably or their shots at goal were just too wayward and ended up missing the target completely.

The men in white finally got a golden opportunity to score after receiving a penalty in the 68th minute for a clear handball inside the box. Vinícius Júnior made no mistake whatsoever and equalised.

But later on, things could have gotten worse as Las Palmas smashed one home to take the lead in the 88th minute. However, Jaime Mata was found to be offside and the goal was immediately ruled out and the Merengues breathed a sigh of relief.

Nothing much of significance happened in the additional 5 minutes as Las Palmas seemed content with the draw and they comfortably kept Madrid at bay for the additional time.

The lack of chemistry could be seen on the pitch and there was a visible lack of cohesion in the Real Madrid team. Sometimes the left wing was overloaded with no one present in the box and the right wing being completely empty.

It was another poor display and Carlo Ancelotti took full responsibility in the post-match press conference and admitted that he himself has to find a solution and not the players. In addition, the Italian also acknowledged the fact that the players struggled to be compact and left spaces between the lines and a solution will have to be found before it is too late.

Although it’s just 3 games into the season, alarm bells have rung. Los Blancos need to get their act together and if there is one man whom the fans and club can trust to find a solution it is Carlo Ancelotti.

Next up, Real Madrid return to the Bernabeu after three days, for a stern test against Real Betis against whom the Merengues have won just once, drew 4 times and lost twice in the last 7 games at home.
