Official: David Alaba tears ACL, expected to be out for the rest of the season

Date:

Injury problems continue to pile up at Real Madrid as David Alaba tore his anterior cruciate ligament in the match against Villarreal. He’s the third player this season to have a ligament tear after Thibaut Courtois and Eder Militao – who are expected to return before the end of the season.

In a comfortable victory over Villareal, the Austrian defender was substituted in the 35th minute after his left knee buckled following a challenge he made on the pitch.

Real Madrid in an official statement said: “After tests carried out on our player David Alaba, he’s been diagnosed with an anterior cruciate ligament tear in his left knee. The player will undergo surgery in the next few days.”

Despite injuries to crucial players this season, Los Blancos currently lead the points table in La Liga and have gone unbeaten in the UEFA Champions League. David Alaba is expected to be out for the rest of the season following this injury.

As for replacements, Real Madrid are thin on defenders as they now only have Rudiger and Nacho as the center-back options. Thus, Ancelotti seemed open to try Tchouameni in a centre-back position for upcoming matches, at least till other defenders make their returns.

Furthermore, Ferland Mendy was also substituted at half-time with a muscular discomfort, adding him to the list of players who are currently on the sidelines.

A relief for Madridistas was to hear Carlo Ancelotti mention that Dani Carvajal may get some minutes against Alaves in the mid-week fixture.

As far as the game was concerned, the Merengues cruised to a 4-1 victory against the Yellow Submarine at the Bernabeu. Jude Bellingham netted his 13th goal of the league and Luka Modric ended up with a goal and an assist.

Real Madrid gain a much-needed win which takes them to the top of the table with 42 points, having played one more match than Girona who will face Alaves on Monday.
